The Master Stockman Scholarship is one of the most prestigious awards given to junior livestock project exhibitors and is generously sponsored each year by the Wisconsin State Fair Foundation.
The Wisconsin Livestock Breeders Master Stockman Award recognizes knowledge, skill, leadership, and excellence within beef, sheep and swine project work.
Master Stockman Award Requirements & Rules:

All Master Stockman applicants and/or their immediate families must be paid WLBA members. Membership applications can be found online at www.wisconsinlivestockbreeders.com.

The Master Stockman Scholarship is available to high school seniors graduated in 2013 through young adults age 19 years or younger by January 1st, 2013.

Applicants must have participated in one or more of the following events: the WLBA Spring Preview, the Wisconsin Livestock Show Camp or the Summer Spectacular Show a minimum of three out of the last five years.

Master Stockman applicants must choose and apply within one species only; beef, sheep or swine.

Previous Master Stockman winners ($750 award) within any species are not eligible to reapply.

Previous Runner-up Master Stockman winners ($500 award) may reapply within any species; as long as they meet all requirements listed above, but will be eligible to receive a monetary award no more than twice.
Master Stockman Scholarship Process:

An original hard copy of the Master Stockman Award application AND (5) copies (photos do not need to be color) should be mailed to the WLBA office with a postmark date of no later than January 3, 2014.

An electronic copy of your application and a scanned picture of you should be emailed to the WLBA office by no later than 11:59 pm on January 3, 2014. Please email to alfhamp@centurytel.net.

Up to a maximum of 10 applications, based on the quality of applications submitted, regardless of species, will be chosen to advance to the interview level held at the WLBA Annual Meeting in March of 2014. All applicants will be notified of results in early February of 2014

From the applicants interviewed, (3) $1000 Master Stockman Award winners and (2) $250 Honorable Mention Master Stockman Awards will be chosen.
Master Stockman Application Tips:

Applicants should answer each question as it pertains to their project as completely as possible. Your application will be judged on the depth of the knowledge of your project and your documented involvement and leadership shown in the livestock industry.

Photos are not required, but are highly encouraged to document and enhance your application. Please scan photos directly into your electronic application.

Criteria for the interview process will include personal appearance (you are encouraged to dress as if you are participating in a job interview), knowledge of your project, presentation and knowledge of your application, and the ability to communicate and answer questions.

2013 Master Stockman Winners & Honorees

The Wisconsin Livestock Breeders Association honored three Master Stockman Award winners at their March 23rd Annual Meeting & Recognition Program, each Master Stockman winner was awarded a $750 scholarship.
Earning the 2013 Beef Master Stockman Award was Nick Colle of Luxemburg. He is the son of Susan and Michael Colle and is a student at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. This year's Sheep Master Stockman Award went to Jenna Langer, daughter of Randy and Sue Langer of De Forest. Jenna is a student at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. The winner of the 2013 Swine Master Stockman Award was Brian Wehrle, New London. He is the son of Richard and Ann Wehrle, and is a student at Fox Valley Technical College.
Runners-up in the Master Stockman competition, who are not designated by their preferred species, were Shea Esser of Bloomington, a student at the UW-River Falls; Aaron Zimmerman of Spencer, a student at UW-River Falls, and Calli Bayer, Ringle, a student at Iowa State University. Each runner-up was awarded a $500 scholarship.
